Research Archives, University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa

This is the start-up homepage for the Research Archives at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa.

This site includes the two major research archives at the University, namely the Historical Papers Research Archive (HPRA), and the South African History Archive (SAHA). In addition it incorporates our partner institution, the Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe Museum & Learning Centre, and the projects AFRAPIX, MEDU, and the future SACHED Archiving Project, as well as a collaborative partnership with the Rikkyo Research Center for Cooperative Civil Societies in Tokyo, Japan and their anti-Apartheid collections. This multi-institutional setup allows for searching across these institution's online finding aids and searchable digital items.

You can use the Browse facilities and search bar in order to conduct your search across, or you can proceed to the individual institutions and projects using these links:

This digital repository is based on the Open Access application AtoM, which is a fully web based archival description application that is based on International Council on Archives (ICA) standards. AtoM is an acronymn for Access to Memory. The ICA and its project collaborators are making this application available as open source software to provide archival institutions with a free and easy to use option for putting their archival collections online. See the About page for access to the AtoM project site and its comprehensive documentation.
