South Africa has been on lock-down due to COVID-19, and the University is gradually reopening in accordance with Government regulations.

As of the 8 September 2020 Historical Papers is open for Wits University staff and students who are able to access the campus on a permit system. We are not yet open to members of the public at this stage.


At least one staff member will be physically present in the Historical Papers Research Archive's reading room, and will also assist with remote enquiries, including:

- telephonic or email based guidance through our online platforms - Landline tel.no. (011)717-1940 (International: +27 11 717-1940)
- verification of requests relating to our archival collections, including genealogical enquiries relating to the Anglican Church in Southern Africa
- very limited scanning and document provision by email of archival documents where possible and reasonable

Staff members will continue checking their emails on a daily basis, even when not being at their physical work place. Please see staff emails HERE.

We will communicate any change in regulations provided by the Government of South Africa and the University of the Witwatersrand. Also follow the communication which the University provides on the WITS HOME PAGE.
