 The collection contains interviews, which were conducted over a period of about 15 years by staff of the IASR. People interviewed were mainly rural people in the Transvaal, labour tenants, sharecroppers, women who had worked on the land or had done domestic work for farmers. There are also some interviews with urban and township dwellers.   
 The material provides an insight into South Africa's social history from the beginning of the 20th century, and include research material for Charles van Onselen's book 'The Seed is Mine'.   
 The photographic section includes a large number of photographs which has been arranged under topics of modern South African history, followed by 3 groups of photographs which resulted from the projects 'Kas Maine', 'Share cropping and labour tenancy'; and 'Women'.

Fb Kas Maine Project   
 The Kas Maine Project collection of photographs comprises over 500 items.   
 They include: Kas Maine and his family; farms in the Bloemhof district; farmers and traders; sharecroppers and their families; agriculture and stock; rural towns in the Western Transvaal; rural poverty; early transport; early diggings.   
    
Fc Share Cropping and Labour Tenancy   
 The photographs are of share croppers in various places in South Africa, and were taken in 1979 and the 1980s when the people were interviewed.   
    
Fd Women Project, Phokeng   
 The photographs are of women who were interviewed for the project, and of their homes, in Phokeng near Rustenburg. There are a few unidentified photographs and some maps.
